NPORS (N101) Mobile Crane
Course Introduction
The NPORS N101 Mobile Crane Operator course is an intensive, comprehensive training program designed to equip individuals with the complete technical capabilities required to safely configure and operate a mobile crane. Accredited by the National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPORS), training fully aligns with LOLER 1998, PUWER 1998, and BS 7121 Parts 1-3 statutory crane safety frameworks.
Learning Outcomes
- Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator
- Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
- Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
- Be able to locate and identify key controls and explain their functions
- Set up exclusion zone
- Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for mobile crane use
- Conduct all pre-operational and running checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
- Prepare the mobile crane for use and operate machine safely and efficiently
- Environmental considerations
- Carry out all end of work and shut down procedures
Course Contents
Theory
The theoretical training details the legislation, safe siting, safe operations, calculations, weather limits, and hazardous site variables associated with major lifting installations.
- Siting Stability & Variables: Verifying ground load-bearing thresholds, checking ground pressure charts, and selecting appropriate dimension packing timber mats to safely seat outriggers.
- Wind Limitations: Learning to identify local wind speed values at the source, confirming structural limitations against duty charts, and monitoring platform reactions while managing strict limits for personnel lifts.
- Rigging Math & Radius Metrics: Measuring operational lifting radii strictly from the center of slew to the center of the hook block attachment, and calculating rope requirements based on BS 7121 rules.
- Site Rules & Overhead Power lines: Mapping out proper clear margins around public zones and navigating standard proximity risks, including working near overhead power lines.
- Mandatory Documentation: Knowing how to source and verify the machine’s active Service Schedule, Thorough Examination Reports, Insurance Certificates, and Manufacturer Handbook.
- Safe Operation of Mobile Cranes: How to operate a mobile crane in different scenarios, crane utilization, safe lifting, swinging, navigating, landing practices etc.
Practical
The heavy practical segment evaluates the trainee’s ability to drive over challenging terrains and navigate loads smoothly.
- Pre-Use Technical Inspections: Performing exhaustive manual checks on the engine, tyres, hydraulic lines, slew pins, limit switches, hoist ropes, hook blocks, structural boom integrity etc as per Mobile crane’s pre-use inspection checklist.
- Driving & Reversing Restrictions: Navigating the massive crane base safely over variable job site pathways and executing complex reversing maneuvers through a tight restriction zone.
- Outrigger & Level Siting: Manually extending all outriggers, seating them squarely on structural block supports, leveling the crane frame, and ensuring all wheels are lifted completely clear of the ground with suspension locked out.
- Lifting Tasks: Executing load lifting tasks as per NPORS guidelines.
- Precision Placement & Landing: Landing every single piece of operational test material within an exacting 100mm tolerance of the target landing points.
- De-Rigging & Safe Travel Stowage: Stowing the extension jibs, fully retracting and lowering the telescopic boom sections into the rest bracket, securing the heavy hook block safely for the public highway, locking the outriggers, cooling down the engine turbo, and removing the key.
Assessment
- Practical assessment of Mobile Crane operational tasks. Observation and performance evaluation by certified NPORS instructor as per the NPORS practical test sheet.
- Written examination (Combination of subjective and objective questions) to test theoretical knowledge.
Training Methodology
This course uses a blend of theoretical and practical learning methods to ensure knowledge retention and hands-on skill development. Training delivery includes:

Assessment
Other Information Operators are also required to pass the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environmental test within the two years prior to application for the (Construction Industry) Operator or Competent Operator Card.
Certification
Candidates who successfully complete the course and pass the assessment will receive:
- NPORS Operator Card valid for 3 years, subject to refresher training and reassessment.
Entry Requirements
Participants must meet the following criteria to enroll in the course:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Be medically fit to perform Mobile crane operating duties.
- Have a basic understanding of English (for verbal and written communication).
- Ideally, have some prior experience in Mobile Crane operations (recommended but not mandatory).
